    Terror Behind the Walls: Halloween at Eastern State Penitentiary

    Eastern State Penitentiary was designed to be frightening. With fortress walls thirty feet high, enclosing eleven acres of cellblocks, the building was built to intimidate. These crumbling walls, rusting cell doors and vaulted, arched hallways left 31,000 visitors unnerved in our 2000 Halloween tour. This tour was called "perfect for Halloween" by The New York Times.
